We asked some of our most well-travelled contributors, interviewees and partners about their favourite moments on the road – the experiences that sparked their love for travel or have stuck with them over the years.

Here at battleface, travel is what gets us out of bed in the morning.

The thrill of landing in a new destination, of immersing ourselves in a foreign culture, of pushing ourselves to our physical limits and expanding our understanding of this wide, wonderful planet we all share.

But we can’t do any of that right now.

So, instead we’re going to bask in the warm memories of our favourite travel experiences and daydream about that happy point in the future where we’ve beaten this pandemic.

Torbjørn C. Pedersen (‘Thor’) is a round-the-world adventurer who’s aiming to become the first person to visit every country on Earth without flying. Thor’s currently stranded in Hong Kong until travel restrictions are lifted.

Solomon Islands, 2019: I had been on the road for more than six years without returning home. Locked into a project aiming to reach every country without flying. I was tired and done with it. The joy of travel had long faded away. A typhoon had me stuck and while I waited for the next ship I ran into a village elder who invited me to stay with him for a few days.

I took him up on the offer and together we reached Vori Vori in a small engine-driven canoe. The village had no running water or electricity. They caught fresh fish every day and collected rainwater. Coconuts were a big part of the cuisine.

The village elder wanted to know if I had a laptop and perhaps some films? That night under the moon, around 80 villagers huddled around my laptop which was playing ‘The Thin Red Line.’ Priceless! I once again felt like a traveller.

Around the world in (not-quite 80 ways) with Torbjørn C. Pedersen
